Chelsea make huge Jonathan David transfer decision as ‘talks held’ over deal

Chelsea have engaged in discussions with Lille forward Jonathan David, as reported by The Athletic.

Representatives for the 24-year-old have been in talks with the Blues regarding a potential transfer.

With just one year remaining on his contract, David is available for transfer, following Lille president Olivier Letang’s public announcement that the forward is free to leave. However, no formal approach has been made to the French club yet.

Chelsea are in the market for a new striker this summer to bolster Enzo Maresca’s squad.

They previously held talks with Aston Villa about Jhon Duran, but no offer has been made. The club is now considering other options, including Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion.

If no transfer for David materializes this summer, he will be able to negotiate a free transfer starting in January.

David scored 19 goals in Ligue 1 last season and has consistently performed well since his move from Belgian club Gent in 2020.

He netted 24 league goals in the 2022/23 season and had 15 and 13 goals in the previous two seasons, respectively.

The Canadian forward has been linked with Premier League clubs before, with reports suggesting he has been offered to Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

Currently, he is with the Canadian national team at the Copa America. On Friday night, Canada suffered a 2-0 defeat to Argentina, a match in which Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez did not participate, having recently returned from a long-term injury and subsequent surgery.
