Commentator calls Upamecano ‘UpaMaguire’ in Bayern’s draw vs Man City

Dayot Upamecano was called ‘UpaMaguire’ by beIN Sports’ commentator in Bayern Munich’s Champions League 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Wednesday.

The Frenchman had a game to forget as he was fortunate to avoid getting sent off in the first half for his foul on Erling Haaland before play was brought back for an offside.

Bayern had chances to pull a goal back after their 3-0 defeat in the first leg at the Allianz Arena but their hopes were finally ended in the 57th minute when Haaland capitalised on Upamecano’s fall inside the box and finished beyond Yann Sommer.

Unknown to Upamecano, it got worse in the closing stages of the match as beIN Sports’ Arabic commentator began call the centre-back ‘UpaMaguire’, and viewers picked up on the comparison with Manchester United’s captain.

Bayern, meanwhile, equalised through Joshua Kimmich’s penalty in the 83rd minute but Man City saw the game out to win 4-1 in aggregate and reach the semi-final where they will face Real Madrid.

‘Of course, three years in a row in the semi finals of the Champions League,’ Pep Guardiola said after City’s draw with Bayern.

‘We struggled in the first half. Upamecano broke all the lines down our left side and we struggled with Coman. We were fortunate before the penalty miss, they had one or two chances and anything could happen but we defended really well.

‘The finishing from Erling was really, really good. He is so young. The experience that we have in this competition, the players feel it a lot, they want to do it really well. The second half was much, much better since minute one.

‘We are exhausted. I don’t know how we recover to play against Sheffield United [in the FA Cup semi-final]. Now is a tough moment for the game on Saturday.’
