Ferdinand says one Man Utd player ‘shouldn’t be at the club’ after City defeat

Rio Ferdinand opines that a certain Manchester United player “does not belong at the club” following their defeat to Manchester City.

The Red Devils suffered a 3-1 loss to City in the 192nd Manchester derby on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford surprised United by securing an early lead with a remarkable goal, yet Phil Foden’s two goals and a late strike from Erling Haaland led to Erik ten Hag’s team suffering their second consecutive league defeat.

United’s performance was lackluster, often defending deep inside their penalty area, though many supporters anticipated City to win by a wider margin than 3-1.

Ten Hag faced challenges as several key players, such as central defenders Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire, were sidelined due to injuries.

Experienced defender Jonny Evans earned his 17th Premier League start of the season after rejoining the club last summer, stepping into the starting XI.

The 36-year-old departed Old Trafford in 2015 but returned to offer defensive depth and valuable experience.

His significant playing time this season has surprised many, including former teammate Rio Ferdinand, who, despite being impressed by Evans, believes he shouldn’t be featuring for the club.

“I didn’t expect him to come in and play as many games, and I didn’t expect him to do as well as he’s done,” Ferdinand said on his FIVE podcast.

“But he hasn’t put a foot wrong, it’s crazy. He’s good with the ball, he’s probably good with the younger players. He’ll probably go into coaching after.

“He wouldn’t have expected to play as many games but listen, the way he’s going it wouldn’t surprise me if he got a new contract, if not there then definitely somewhere else.

“But really, as well as he’s done and as much as I admire him as a professional, he really shouldn’t be at Man United.

“It just shows you where they are. He shouldn’t be being asked to come in and play and chase [Erling] Haaland around. That’s not what the top clubs are doing nowadays.”
