Garnacho received the ball on the left side, curled a powerful shot into the top corner, but surprisingly didn’t celebrate, looking rather subdued.
Fans speculated that Garnacho’s lack of celebration could be due to recent criticism. After the game, captain Fernandes was seen talking to the Argentine forward, with TV cameras capturing the interaction.
In a longer clip shared by @strettynews on TikTok, Fernandes speaks to Garnacho before Amad Diallo approaches and shares a hug with him.
Lisandro Martinez, Joshua Zirkzee, and Andre Onana also offered some support to Garnacho, who seemed somewhat downcast.
Recently, a fan had urged Garnacho to “pass better, score a goal, and work on his first touch” before the Europa League match against PAOK, which may have affected his demeanor.
He proceeded to reply, “Why are you not playing?” to the supporter.
Garnacho himself hasn’t explained why he chose not to celebrate but Fernandes confirmed that his decision was related to fan comments.
Speaking to the BBC, he said: “Garnacho scored a banger but didn’t celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans. I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do.
“I told him to celebrate, it was something special. He is a special player, we have difference makers. They are the ones who win us games. We want them to score every game but that isn’t going to happen.”
In all competitions this campaign, Garnacho has seven goals and four assists in 18 games.
