Cody Gakpo reveals unwanted nickname he was given by former PSV team-mates

Liverpool player Cody Gakpo has now revealed the nickname he was given by his former team-mates at PSV.

Gakpo moved to Anfield at the beginning of the January transfer window, having been linked with Manchester United for a number of months.

The Reds star quickly adapted to life on Merseyside, netting a brace against the Red Devils in the 7-0 win at Anfield in March.

The Netherlands international has scored three goals in eight matches in all competitions this campaign, and shown his versatility by playing as a centre forward, wide attacker and even in midfield.

That versatility was also on full display at PSV, where he scored 21 goals and made 24 assists in the last 18 months of his spell at the club.

While speaking during an interview on the club’s official YouTube channel, Gakpo revealed the nickname his PSV team-mates had for him when he was coming through the youth academy.

He explained: “At PSV, they used to call me ‘long neck’ – because I had a long neck. But you’re not going to call me that…”

When it was suggested by the interviewer that he could be called that again, Gakpo laughed: “Oh my days. Not going to happen, this is not going to happen.”

Gakpo has missed the last two matches though after being forced off during the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham last month.

But he did return to training ahead of the Merseyside derby clash against Everton, sparking hope that he could be fit to start the game ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference.
