Due to his remarkable performances, he has been strongly linked with a move back to the Premier League, despite his earlier stint with Brighton from 2018 to 2021, where he did not make a league appearance.
Nevertheless, he has demonstrated his abilities in English football, scoring 43 goals in 116 appearances for Coventry City in the Championship between 2021 and 2023, which led to his transfer to Sporting.
Several clubs, including Arsenal, have shown interest in the Swedish international, but reports indicate that he has ‘chosen Man United’ as his preferred destination.
It is noteworthy that Ruben Amorim, 40, was Gyokeres’ manager at Sporting before he took over as United’s head coach in November 2024.
Amorim shared his thoughts on the possible transfer during an interview on TNT Sports earlier this season.
“I can’t make fun of it, right now, it was hard for me to leave, if I start joking about this Gyokeres situation I’ll get in trouble,” Amorim said. “This is my city, this is my country, so I’ll respect it.”
“Viktor has to stay until the end of the season, and then his life maybe is going somewhere else,” he added.
Gyokeres’ current contract with Sporting runs until the summer of 2028, and he is valued at €75m (£62.3m) according to Transfermarkt.
As reported by the i paper, Manchester United’s decision to avoid “overpaying” has improved their Profitability and Sustainability Regulation (PSR) stance, with the club concentrating on long-term targets.
Marcus Rashford’s loan to Aston Villa includes a £40m option to buy clause.
By waiting until the summer, some of the proceeds from Rashford’s potential sale, at the age of 27, could be allocated towards acquiring Gyokeres.
The i paper indicates that Sporting is “willing” to let go of their forward for around £60m, approximately £23m less than what would have been required during the winter transfer window.
