Jermaine Jenas explains why Man Utd need to sign free agent Jan Vertonghen

Vertonghen

Jermaine Jenas has told Manchester United they need to sign former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer.

The Belgian spent eight successful years at Tottenham, playing over 300 matches for the club and even helping the club reach the Champions League final last campaign.

Vertonghen confirmed his exit from the London team after the final round of Premier League games and the defender will now look to revive his career elsewhere.

Some clubs in Europe are interested in his signature and former Tottenham star Jenas believes Manchester United should be looking to offer him a deal.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘I keep touting him around everywhere but I’m sorry, Jan Vertonghen on a free is the best free transfer centre half out there.

‘If you can get Harry Maguire back on the right side and get an actual ball-playing centre-half as a left-sider, that little dynamic may change things for them as well and he’s free.

‘Manchester United will know what they’re doing, they’ll have a plan but defensively they’re miles off it.

‘I know how good he is. It baffles me when I see him in the stand every week because I know how good he this player is. I’ve played with him, I’ve watched him and on a free transfer, it just makes sense.’

Vertonghen has been a key in the Tottenham team for almost a decade and conceded he was ‘sad’ to be saying goodbye to the club.

‘So my time at the club comes to an end. A sad day for many reasons,’ he posted on Twitter.

‘I will miss the friends I’ve made here, the staff that make the club run, playing at the amazing new stadium & of course you fans.

‘Thank you for all the support over the years. You’ve been amazing. We had many unbelievable memories but for now, it’s goodbye.’
