The Liverpool attacker lost his life when the car he was traveling in with his 26-year-old brother, Andre—also a professional footballer from Penafiel—veered off the road and caught fire.
Eyewitnesses who contacted emergency services (112) reported that the car was fully ablaze, with the fire also spreading to the surrounding brush.
Diogo Jota, who was 28, made the move to Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth 44.7 million euros. Since joining, he featured in 182 matches for the club, netting 65 goals and assisting 26 times.
During his time with the Merseyside club, he helped win three major trophies: the Premier League title in 2024–25, the FA Cup in 2021–22, and the Carabao Cup in the same season.
Earlier in his career, the Portuguese international briefly joined Atletico Madrid, who signed him from Paços de Ferreira in 2016 for 7 million euros.
Although he scored in a pre-season match against Crotone (2-0), he never made an official appearance for Atletico.
