Salah, now 32, is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s greatest players. However, he has faced ongoing speculation about a potential departure from Liverpool over the last few seasons.
In 2022, Klopp was reportedly exploring alternative options, including Antony, in case Salah left.
According to The Times, Salah was engaged in contract renewal discussions with Liverpool at the time. Mike Gordon of FSG ultimately prioritized extending Salah’s contract over pursuing replacements.
Despite Klopp’s consideration, Antony ended up joining Manchester United that summer for £82 million. Since then, he has struggled, contributing only 17 goals and assists in 87 games.
Antony had shone at Ajax before his move, but whether he could have thrived under Klopp in Liverpool remains uncertain. Filling Salah’s enormous shoes would likely have been a daunting task.
Salah’s current contract expires at the end of the season, but earlier this month, he hinted at his focus on Liverpool’s title ambitions, sharing his resolve on social media after their 2-1 win over Brighton.
He said, on Instagram: “Top of the table is where this club belongs. Nothing less. All teams win matches but there’s only 1 champion in the end. That’s what we want. Thank you for your support last night. No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like.”
Salah also admitted “it’s my last year at the club” speaking after the Reds thrashed United 3-0 earlier this season.
