Aymeric Laporte mocks Arsenal defeat as Man City in driving seat for league title

Aymeric Laporte appears to have mocked Arsenal with his tweet after the Manchester City star posted a hilarious gif in response to the North London side’s recent defeat.

The City defender uploaded a gif of Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson with the caption ‘Mmmmmmm I can almost smell it’, in reference to how close Laporte’s side are to lifting a fifth Premier League title in six years.

Arsenal’s 3-0 home defeat by Brighton appears to have now handed over the crown to Pep Guardiola’s team.

The Gunners were second best to the Seagulls for most of the game at the Emirates and can hardly have any complaints over the result.

Julio Enciso opened the scoring for Brighton when he was left unmarked in the six-yard box to head beyond Aaron Ramsdale.

Replays soon showed that Jakub Kiwior went down clutching his ankle, which is what allowed Enciso the time and space to punish the Gunners.

Arsenal failed to create any meaningful chances in response to falling behind and shortly before second-half stoppage time they were two behind when Undav lobbed Ramsdale to spark huge celebrations in the away end.

Pervis Estupinan ended the match with a third and last goal deep into second-half stoppage time, by which time many of the home fans had already made tracks for the exit.

Though it is still possible for Arsenal to lift the title, Man City are now only one win away and have three games to do so.

Up next for Guardiola’s side is a home game against Chelsea, a clash they go into as favourites given the Blues’ miserable campaign and poor run of recent results.

The City boss is confident that his side can get the job done, given he was chanting “two more wins” to the away end at Goodison Park on Sunday after their 3-0 win against Everton.

Many expected City to have a tough time against Sean Dyche’s men after the Toffees battered Brighton last Monday, but they had a comfortable victory

And the mood is now low among the Arsenal camp, with Martin Odegaard admitting: “Yeah, it feels like that [whether the title is over]. It is going to be very difficult now we have to be honest. It is tough to take.

“It is not a good feeling at the moment. The way we played, particularly in the second half, I don’t know what happened to be honest. It feels like there is no hope now.”
