Man Utd confirm first major exit of the summer with key player to leave

Manchester United has confirmed that Raphael Varane will part ways with the team at the conclusion of this season, marking a significant period of transition for Old Trafford.

Varane, a transfer from Real Madrid in 2021, is set to depart from Old Trafford following the expiration of his contract in late June.

As one of football’s most esteemed defenders and a World Cup champion, Varane was instrumental in United’s Carabao Cup victory last season, establishing a strong defensive duo with Lisandro Martinez.

Despite his contributions, Varane’s tenure has been marred by recurring injuries, and he is presently striving to recover in time for the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25.

At 31 years old, Varane has played 93 games over three seasons with Manchester, including 24 starts across various competitions this year.

He is poised to exit as a free agent, with United deciding not to activate the additional one-year option in his contract.

In a message to United supporters in a video shared on social media, Varane said: ‘To you guys, supporters of Manchester United.

‘It’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt. The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Manchester United player was insane; the atmosphere was amazing.

‘I fell in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents. For my kids, it’s home here. It’s going to be a special place for me for life.

‘When the fans go to Wembley it’s something they remember for life. To share that moment with them [winning the Carabao Cup] was absolutely amazing.

‘Despite the fact we had a difficult season, I’m very positive for the future. The new owners are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy. I’ll see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye for the last game at home this season and it’s going to be a very emotional day for me, for sure.’

This summer could see a significant exodus from Manchester United, with up to 12 players potentially exiting as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS intensify their campaign to rejuvenate the club, following several key off-field appointments.

Raphael Varane is likely to attract interest from teams in the Saudi Pro League, and his ex-Real Madrid colleague Casemiro is also on the radar of at least two clubs from Saudi Arabia, following an underwhelming second year with United.
