Amorim has experienced a mixed start at Old Trafford, securing just two wins in his first nine Premier League games. However, a victory at the Etihad and a draw at Anfield have offered some optimism.
The new United manager might be tempted to bring in additional attacking options this January, amid reports of a strained relationship with forward Joshua Zirkzee.
Nevertheless, Amorim might prefer to wait until the summer, with reports indicating that his former player, Gyokeres, could be available for a discounted price at that time.
According to Record Portugal, Gyokeres has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Sporting to allow him to leave for a fee between £58.6m and £62.8m, instead of his £83m release clause.
Gyokeres’ decision to remain in Portugal last summer was largely influenced by Amorim, making a summer exit highly probable.
The 26-year-old has scored 74 goals in 79 appearances for Sporting since his move from the Championship, and his arrival at Old Trafford could signify the true start of Amorim’s era.
A summer move would likely be more practical for United, considering the club’s risk of breaching PSR if they spend heavily this month.
In a recent episode of The Athletic’s podcast, transfer expert David Ornstein discussed the situation at Old Trafford.
“The way it has been explained to me is that Manchester United are going to be OK on PSR this month,” he said.
“It’s not like the walls are collapsing on their financial situation – it’s not great, clearly, they’ve got work to do. But I do think there is a bit of scope to do something [in the January window].”
