Man Utd offered Mauro Icardi as part of Lukaku transfer

Manchester United are reportedly looking at the possibility of signing Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi as part of the deal that will see Romelu Lukaku move to Italy.

The Serie A giants are believed to be closing in on a £62million deal with United for Romelu Lukaku, with the Belgium international ready to sign a five-year-contract worth £6.6m-a-season.

However, before Inter can complete the deal for Lukaku, they first need to sell Icardi – though they are struggling to find any suitors for the Argentine.

Now the Daily Express claim Inter are willing to explore the possibility of selling Icardi to United as part of the deal for Lukaku, lowering the amount of fee they’ll have to pay.

Icardi has a bad reputation and was stripped of the captaincy last campaign, yet the report says United would be interested in bringing the frontman to Old Trafford.

Lukaku’s possible exit would leave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slightly short on options in attack, with just Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial – who has played more on the wing – capable of playing the position.

Solskjaer may make Mason Greenwood part of the first-team squad, but Icardi would provide proven firepower in Lukaku’s absence.

Lukaku’s possible move to Inter Milan already has the support of his national team manager, Roberto Martinez, who told HLN: ‘It is clear that he has to leave Manchester United.

‘It would be a good thing for both parties. It is now important that Romelu finds the right club.’

Lukaku had one of his least prolific campaigns in England, only scoring 12 times, though still out-scored Icardi who scored 11 goals in a disappointing season for Inter – though he did register four assists to Lukaku’s zero.
