Manchester United went up against Matic’s current team, Lyon, at the Groupama Stadium, where the match ended in a 2-2 draw after Rayan Cherki netted a dramatic late equalizer. ..Continue Reading
United initially fell behind to a Thiago Almada free-kick that slipped past Onana, but they responded with goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, only to concede again in the closing moments.
Before the game, Matic—formerly of United—spoke to the media on behalf of the French club and harshly criticized Onana, labeling him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.”
His remarks followed Onana’s earlier claim that Manchester United were a stronger team than Lyon.
The Cameroonian fired back with a dig of his own. He finished a statement on X by writing: “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”
However, it was Matic who had the last laugh, as Onana was responsible for both of Lyon’s goals. The ex-Inter Milan goalkeeper completely misjudged Almada’s initial effort and then failed to properly handle the second, allowing Cherki to capitalize and secure a draw for Paulo Fonseca’s side.
Matic remained on the bench throughout the match, but cameras caught him in the 89th minute with United still ahead.
There didn’t seem to be any interaction between Matic and Onana after their public exchange, but the Serbian midfielder made his presence felt on social media afterward.
He posted an Instagram story featuring his son Filip surrounded by shirts collected from Matic’s former United teammates—including Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Amad.
Interestingly, the boy was seen standing next to a jersey belonging to third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton, rather than Onana.
On his Instagram feed, Matic also shared of a picture of him with a number of Man United staff members, accompanied by the caption: “Nice to see my brothers again”.
After the match, Amorim refused to criticise Onana, commenting: “When one game has a mistake the whole team has a mistake”.
Asked if he would consider dropping his goalkeeper, the Portuguese coach added: “No, we’ll continue to do the same thing in training, seeing the game and trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.”
