Edouard Mendy explains the role Kepa has played in his superb performances

Edouard Mendy has heaped praises on Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcus Bettinelli for pushing him every day in training after a good start to the new campaign.

Mendy joined the club last summer for a reported fee of £22m, and has been a regular in goal this season as Chelsea remain unbeaten in all competitions.

With the 29-year-old in goal, the Blues have only conceded once in five matches this campaign and look set to challenge in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

The Senagelese goalie has paid homage to the other two keepers at the club, saying that they are the main reason that he is able to perform to the levels he is.

‘When you play for this kind of club, you will find big competition [for places], a big fight for playing,’ he told Chelsea’s website.

‘You can see it at Manchester City and at Liverpool – two good goalkeepers who are ready to play. So you have to be the best for yourself but for the team also because when the coach puts you on the pitch, you have to show why he called you.

‘Every time you have to show it, and you have to push each other at training. It’s competition and Kepa, me or Marcus [Bettinelli], we want to be the best for the team.’

In a recent interview with Spanish outlet Marca, Kepa said that it’s been hard for him to be Mendy’s No.2, but said he will keep pushing himself to get back his place as first choice.

‘Everyone wants to play. Everyone wants to be in the starting line up on Saturday and Sunday,’ he said.

‘For outfield players, there’s a chance of coming on, but the goalkeeper surely isn’t going to play. It’s not easy. The game days when you don’t play aren’t easy.

‘You need to assume your role at that point. Help as best you can. During the week, on a daily basis, push to the maximum. Doing it for you, not for anyone else, just to be prepared. To keep improving and to be ready when given the opportunity or for any circumstance.

‘It’s one of the secrets of the successes we’ve had. The team we have is filled with great players.’
