Edouard Mendy speaks out on Kepa Arrizabalaga relationship

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has spoken out about his relationship with his teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mendy joined Chelsea from Rennes last year and was immediately thrusted into first-team action, playing 31 games in the Premier League during his opening season in England.

He has firmly cemented himself ahead of Kepa as the club’s No.1 keeper this term after putting in several match-winning displays for Thomas Tuchel’s side, including a flurry of fine saves during Chelsea’s narrow 1-0 victory over Brentford.

The Blues currently sit top of the Premier League table, having conceded just only goals in their opening 11 games – the lowest amount by any club in the top flight.

Despite being picked to start ahead of Arrizabalaga, the Senegal international says that there is still a positive atmosphere between the keepers.

‘My relationship with Kepa is very good, as is my relationship with Marcus [Bettinelli], the third goalkeeper at Chelsea. We compete with interest,’ Mendy told Egyptian outlet El Match TV during the international break.

‘The most important thing is that the competition between the players is for the benefit of the team. The titles are for the club and not for the player.

‘My relationship with my teammates is very good. I respect everyone and there is always a state of friendship between us.’

The Blues will be looking to continue their good form when they travel to the Midlands to take on struggling Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday.
