Lionel Messi didn’t hesitate when naming the greatest footballer he’s ever seen play live

Lionel Messi wasted no time in revealing the greatest player he has ever seen perform live.

Since making his professional debut with Barcelona, Messi has cemented his legacy as one of football’s all-time greats.

He boasts an unmatched record of multiple Ballon d’Or titles, along with several Champions League trophies with Barcelona and a World Cup victory with Argentina. ..Continue Reading

His remarkable goal tally in a single year remains one of the highest ever recorded.

Despite his illustrious career, Messi has no plans to retire anytime soon, with reports suggesting he is close to extending his stay at Inter Miami for a few more years.

Over the years, he has shared the pitch with some of football’s finest, including Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Wayne Rooney.

However, when asked to name the best player he has ever witnessed in action, Messi did not choose any of his former teammates or rivals.

Instead, he singled out Real Madrid icon Ronaldo Nazario, praising the Brazilian legend as the most impressive player he has ever seen.

He told TyC Sports in 2020: “Ronaldo Nazario was a phenomenon. Of all the strikers I have seen, for me he was the best. An impressive player from any aspect.”

Messi’s choice for the toughest defender he has ever faced might come as a surprise to many.

Instead of selecting a well-known star, he pointed to former Manchester City right-back Pablo Maffeo as his most challenging opponent, recalling their encounters when Maffeo played for Girona.

Despite being on City’s books, Maffeo never made a senior appearance for the club before moving to Stuttgart in 2018. Since joining Mallorca in 2022, he has featured regularly for the Spanish side.

Messi told DAZN: “Man-marking doesn’t bother me. You know that there will be tough matches, and it can be strange to always have someone around you.

“In truth, it hasn’t happened to me that often. Pablo Maffeo of Girona [was the toughest]. That was intense!

“I’ve never been one who complains. I think physical contact and kicks are part of the game.”
