Mourinho tips Man Utd star to become ‘phenomenal’ in years to come

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes Dean Henderson is on the right track to become a ‘phenomenal’ goalkeeper.

The England shot-stopper has tussled with David De Gea to become the Red devils’ first choice this campaign.

But, it was Henderson that missed out on their starting line-up for the Europa League final defeat to Villarreal and Solskjaer has a huge decision to make this summer.

Henderson is in competition with Sam Johnstone and Jordan Pickford to start for England at Euro 2020 and while Mourinho does not believe the United keeper is a finished article yet, he believes Henderson will soon become ‘phenomenal’.

“I think they [England’s trio] are good goalkeepers. I don’t think they are phenomenal goalkeepers or, in Dean Henderson’s case, not yet phenomenal. When I say not yet, I say he will be,’ Mourinho told The Times.

“I met him at [Manchester] United when he was a kid and I always remember him asking me to go on loan. He was saying when I come back, I come back to be the No 1.

‘He told me that when he was the fourth choice. He is a kid with an incredible self-confidence and I think he is ready.’

Henderson hasn’t featured in either of England’s warm-up friendly games for the Euros as he joined the group late after United’s run to the Europa League final.

Pickford is currently rhe favourite to get the nod in England’s opening match against Croatia at Wembley on Sunday.
