Nevertheless, when asked to choose the better player, the German midfielder gave his answer without hesitation.
“Vini,” he said. “Yeah, right now. Come on, give him [Yamal] a couple of years.”
Both Yamal and Vinicius Jr have been nominated for the Ballon d’Or, which will be announced on October 28.
Musiala was asked to compare Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr with Manchester City’s Phil Foden, but he stood by his opinion that Vinicius Jr was the better player.
When the comparison shifted to Vinicius Jr and Bruno Fernandes, Musiala once again chose the Brazilian. Vinicius has had an impressive start to the season, with four goals and four assists in nine La Liga matches.
While Yamal, at his young age, is still behind Vinicius in terms of physical and technical development, he has continued his strong form from the Euros. The Barcelona winger currently holds better stats than Vinicius, with five goals and four assists in nine La Liga games.
Musiala is also thriving under Bayern Munich’s new coach, Vincent Kompany, having scored three goals in five Bundesliga appearances this season.
Despite not being nominated for the Ballon d’Or, Musiala has admitted that “individual awards matter” to him.
“I think everyone growing up wants to win an individual award of some kind,” he told the Guardian in September 2024.
“[But] the most important thing is, we had a tough season last season, and [we need] to do better this season. The main focus is on winning trophies, and everything else will come when the time is right.”
