Newcastle have ‘advantage’ in race to sign Chelsea player

Timo Werner and Newcastle

Newcastle United have got an advantage if they push to sign Chelsea striker Timo Werner, according to reports.

The German star struggled to make an impact after his £47.5m move from RB Leipzig last year, scoring just 12 goals in 52 matches in his first campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Due to the huge competition for places in attack following Romelu Lukaku’s return in the summer transfer window, Werner has struggled to secure a regular role this season, starting just three of Chelsea’s Premier League matches so far.

According to Bild, Werner will consider his future if his bit-part role at the club continues for the rest of the season.

According to reports, Newcastle would step up their interest in Werner if he makes it clear that he wants to leave the Blues.

And Newcastle have an advantage in his signature as Werner shares the same agent as Fabian Schar, who is already at the club.

‘Of course, he [Werner] wants to play in the Champions League, but at Chelsea, he said that if it doesn’t work out with the starting eleven, he’ll have to think about something,’ said Bild journalist Christian Falk when asked about Werner’s possible move to Newcastle.

‘Then you have to find someone who will pay €20 million in wages, and Newcastle is naturally ideal for that, especially as his management has a new player in Fabian Schar.

‘He’s in constant contact with the club and then with the management, which means the paths are short.

‘As soon as Werner gives a signal that he would like to leave Chelsea, Newcastle are definitely in the conversation.’

Bild also confirmed that Newcastle have already discussed a possible move for Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

The La Liga giants have been open to selling Coutinho since the start of the summer but were unable to find any buyer for the Brazil international.
