The Professional Game Match Officials Board has given an explanation behind the decision to disallow Cavani’s goal for Manchester United against Tottenham.
The Red devils appeared to have taken the lead when Edinson Cavani latched onto Pogba’s ball, dispatching a calm finish between the legs of Hugo Lloris.
But, Scott McTominay had caught Son Heung-Min with a trailing arm in the build-up leading to the goal and, after a review from VAR, the goal was disallowed by the referee.
That call has led to bemusement among supporters and pundits, with the decision being heavily criticised by Sky Sports’ punditry team at the break.
However, the PGMOL issued an explanation on the disallowed goal in an attempt to provide clarity on the reasons behind the controversial decision.
“It wasn’t part of McTominay’s natural running movement and it was careless,” Sky Sports host Dave Jones read out after the first half of the coverage.
But, That explanation didn’t settle the frustrations of Sky’s pundits Roy Keane, Micah Richards and Jamie Redknapp, all of whom disagreed with the decision.

“I’m amazed, really, I have to say. If that’s a foul, we should all go home, it’s really bizarre,” former United captain Keane stated.
“For a player like Son, to roll around like that, it’s embarrassing. Cavani’s movement is fantastic. That cannot be a foul, it’s not just Son – to be fair, Rashford did it 10 minutes earlier, both centre-forwards rolling around screaming.
“The referee is under huge pressure, they’re doubting every decision they make now. I think he’s got this wrong.”
