Following the confirmation of his investment in February, the British tycoon declared his intention to conduct a thorough review of the club’s operations and roster before the summer season.
A rejuvenation seems necessary for United’s squad; under Erik ten Hag’s management, the team has had a lackluster season and looks likely to be excluded from next year’s Champions League.
The continuity of Ten Hag at United is in question, with Ratcliffe and his chief associate, Sir Dave Brailsford, skeptical about Ten Hag’s capability to lead the team back to the pinnacle of English football.
Irrespective of Ten Hag’s fate, Ratcliffe has a clear vision for the caliber of players he aims to recruit.
“I’d rather find the next [Kylian] Mbappe than spend a fortune trying to buy success,” Ratcliffe told The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club Podcast in March.
“It’s not that clever, is it, buying Mbappe, in a way? Anyone could figure that one out. Much more challenging is to find the next Mbappe or Jude Bellingham or the next Roy Keane.
“It’s not where our focus is, the solution isn’t spending a lot of money on a couple of great players. They’ve done that over the last 10 years.
“The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes who are managing and organising the club and make sure we get recruitment right. It’s such a vital part of running a football club today, finding new players.”
United may consider selling six players, whose total acquisition costs amount to £232 million, to raise funds for new talent.
Antony, the Brazilian forward, might be put on the transfer list just two years following his £86 million transfer from Ajax. Mason Greenwood, after a commendable loan period at Getafe, could also attract a substantial transfer fee.
Amad Diallo is likely to leave due to limited playtime under Ten Hag’s management, and Facundo Pellistri is expected to seek a new club after his loan at Granada concludes.
Jadon Sancho’s future hangs in the balance as his loan with Borussia Dortmund comes to an end; he may either be sold or given another opportunity at Old Trafford, depending on Ten Hag’s managerial status.
Anthony Martial’s departure, upon his contract’s end, won’t generate a transfer fee, but it will significantly reduce the club’s salary expenses.
