France began their Euro 2024 campaign with a strong 1-0 victory over Austria at the Düsseldorf Arena on Monday night.
Les Bleus are among the favorites to win the tournament, having reached the World Cup final less than two years ago.
However, the win was overshadowed by an injury to star player Kylian Mbappe in the closing moments of the match against Austria.
Mbappe broke his nose following a collision with Austria’s Kevin Danso, raising concerns for Real Madrid, who recently signed the forward.
Initially, it was believed that the 25-year-old would not need surgery. However, France manager Didier Deschamps confirmed on Tuesday that Mbappe will require an operation, though not immediately.
According to L’Equipe, Real Madrid expressed their concerns to the French camp, hoping Mbappe would undergo surgery promptly to expedite his recovery and ensure he is ready for his presentation next month.
Mbappe’s official unveiling at the Santiago Bernabéu is scheduled for July 16, but it may be postponed if the surgery leaves visible bruising.
Although Real Madrid’s medical team has inquired about the injury, they cannot intervene as Mbappe remains under contract with Paris Saint-Germain until July 1.
The decision on the timing of his surgery ultimately rests with Mbappe, and while he is with the national team, his recovery is managed by the French Federation.
Nonetheless, Real Madrid have made it clear they do not want their new star to play in Friday’s match against the Netherlands or Tuesday’s against Poland.
Mbappe is expected to make his debut for Real Madrid in the European Super Cup final against Atalanta Bergamo on August 14.
However, if France progress far in Euro 2024, further delaying Mbappe’s surgery, his debut may be postponed until after the start of the La Liga season to allow full recovery.
