Real Madrid give Man Utd fresh hope of signing Raphael Varane

Manchester United remain interested in signing Raphael Varane and the defender has reportedly made his stance clear on a possible move.

Varane is believed to be one of the club’s top targets, along with Dortmund forward Erling Haaland, heading into the summer window.

Varane will be out of contract in Madrid next year and is yet to sign a new contract, leaving the club in a difficult spot heading into the summer transfer window.

If the World Cup-winning Frenchman turns down a new contract, Real Madrid will have to sanction his exit.

The MEN recently reported that Madrid’s preference would be to cash in on the player instead of letting Varane walk away for free in 2022.

And a deal could be on the cards after it emerged on Wednesday that Madrid are closing in on the signing of Bayern defender David Alaba.

The Austrian can play in several positions but some of his best football for Bayern Munich over the last two campaigns has come in central defense.

According to Sky Germany, Alaba has agreed to join Madrid on a five-year deal once his contract at Bayern expires at the end of this campaign.

Alaba’s arrival could open the door for Varane to sign for United, and Madrid would welcome the extra income after Florentino Perez recently conceded the club is ‘in a very bad financial situation’.

Sergio Ramos has also been mooted as a contender to fill United’s vacancy, but it’s believed that Varane is Solskjaer’s preferred target.
