A former Real Madrid midfielder, Alonso joined the club in 2009 from Liverpool in a deal believed to be worth £30m and enjoyed major success in Spain, lifting both the La Liga trophy and the Champions League.
He brought his playing days to an end in 2017 after winning three consecutive Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich, before moving into coaching with Real Sociedad B.
After being appointed Leverkusen boss in mid-2022, Alonso enjoyed a remarkable spell in Germany, securing the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the German Super Cup, while also steering the side to a Europa League final, where they finished runners-up to Atalanta.
On the back of that success, Alonso succeeded Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid in the summer, signing a contract that runs for three years.
In La Liga, Real currently occupy second place, four points behind leaders Barcelona. In the Champions League, Los Blancos sit seventh in their group after six games, a position that still leaves them in the automatic qualification spots.
Despite this, pressure has begun to mount on Alonso at the Santiago Bernabeu, with scrutiny intensifying after a 2-1 home defeat to Manchester City in midweek Champions League action.
According to Cadena Ser, Alvaro Arbeloa — who currently manages Real Madrid Castilla — has emerged as a possible successor should Alonso depart.
Speaking ahead of Sunday evening’s away match against Alaves, Alonso addressed the situation, saying: “In the future, I have no doubt that he could be a coach, but regarding the question [taking over his position], we haven’t discussed it.”
The report also claims that the club’s hierarchy could turn to Arbeloa if Real fail to secure all three points against Alaves.
Arbeloa, a former right-back, played alongside Alonso during their careers at both Liverpool and Real Madrid.
They were also part of Spain’s golden generation, winning two European Championships and a World Cup together.
Arbeloa took over as head coach of Real Madrid Castilla in the summer, succeeding club and Spain legend Raul.
