Cristiano Ronaldo is now the all-time leading goalscorer in European Championship finals history after scoring a brace for Portugal in their Group F opening match against Hungary.
It looked set to be a frustrating evening for the Juve forward, who wasted the best chance of a match dominated by the reigning champions when he ballooned a Bruno Fernandes cross during the closing stages of the first half.
Hungary looked destined to secure an unlikely point before Raphael Guerreiro’s deflected strike put Portugal ahead with just six minutes remaining in the game.
Moments later, Ronaldo stepped up to score a penalty and, in the process, score his tenth goal in European Championship finals history, overtaking former France skipper Michel Platini.
The 36-year-old added to his astonishing international tally in injury-time, rounding off a lovely team move which again involved Rafa Silva.
‘It’s an obscene record,’ said Ronaldo’s former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville after the match.
‘One hundred and six goals for his country is absolutely ridiculous and he continues to beat individual record after individual record.

‘I said before the game players when they give interviews before the game quite often refer to the team.
‘He does refer to the team but he also wants to be the best player in the world and seen as one of the greatest of all-time in terms of scoring more goals than anyone and he’ll go and do it.’
