Cristiano Ronaldo loses iconic No7 Portugal shirt for first time in 17 years

For the first time in over a decade and a half, the No.7 jersey for Portugal was worn by someone other than Cristiano Ronaldo.

The legendary forward, now 39, has been synonymous with the number since he took it over in 2007, following the international retirement of Luis Figo.

However, during the latest international break leading up to Euro 2024, Ronaldo was absent, enjoying a holiday in Saudi Arabia with his family.

Stepping into the No.7 role was Braga’s attacker Bruma, who made a notable appearance in Portugal’s friendly against Sweden, which they won 5-2.

Bruma, 29, has been in fine form this season, contributing eight goals and six assists across competitions.

He honored the No.7 legacy by scoring shortly after entering the match as a substitute.

Bruma’s goal, assisted by Bruno Fernandes, marked his second international goal on his twelfth appearance for Portugal. Fernandes, along with Matheus Nunes of Manchester City, also found the net in the game.

Ronaldo, Portugal’s record holder for both caps and goals, is expected to reclaim the No.7 shirt for the upcoming Euro 2024, provided he remains injury-free. His club, Al-Nassr, is currently positioned second in the Saudi Pro League, trailing the leaders Al-Hilal by 12 points.

The No.7 has been a part of Ronaldo’s identity since his early days at Manchester United in 2003, a number he has carried with pride for both club and country, except for his initial season at Real Madrid, where the No.9 was temporarily his due to the presence of Raul.
