What Ronaldo told Sadio Mane after agreeing Liverpool exit

Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo told him that his transfer move to Bayern Munich was a “great step”.

The Senegal international called time on his spell at Anfield in the summer as he made the £35 million switch to the Bundesliga club.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had rejected two offers prior to accepting the fee that saw him end a six-year stint on Merseyside after a £34m move from Southampton.

His last campaign with Liverpool came as they chased an unprecedented quadruple before winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Mane’s most productive season came when he helped end the 30-year wait to win the Premier League, and he contributed 22 goals.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner and Liverpool attacker were rivals last season as Ronaldo played for Manchester United.

It has been reported that the 38-year-old wanted to sign for Bayern and upon Mane’s move to the German side, he congratulated him on his switch.

“That says everything about the Bundesliga and underlines what I’ve already said: I think you underestimate the Bundesliga here,” said Mane, speaking to BILDSport. “The recent performances in the Champions League prove that.

“I met Cristiano Ronaldo in Mallorca before this season after my move was completed. He congratulated me and told me: ‘A great club. This is a great step for you.'”

It’s been an unstable debut campaign in Germany for the 30-year-old as he’s been forced to deal with injury issues.

A leg injury even saw him miss the build-up to the World Cup and Senegal’s campaign in Qatar, returning recently for Julian Nagelsman’s side.
