Vinicius Jr was another strong contender for the title of the world’s best men’s footballer. The Brazilian played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League victories in the 2023-24 season, netting 24 goals across all competitions.
Rodri was chosen as the Ballon d’Or recipient over the Real Madrid player. He also enjoyed a successful season, winning the Premier League with Manchester City and the European Championship with Spain.
Despite his achievements, Rodri didn’t receive Ronaldo Nazario’s approval. According to the legendary striker, the true Ballon d’Or winner wasn’t Vinicius Jr either.
“Without detracting from Rodri, Vinicius had to win the Ballon d’Or, which has missed a great opportunity to crown Vinicius as the best in the world,” Ronaldo told Marca.
“It has nothing to do with Rodri, let it be clear, but Vinicius has been much more decisive last season.”
If Rodri is seen as a controversial winner in the eyes of fans in Real Madrid and Brazil and beyond, Ronaldo’s choice would have come as a surprise to Vini Jr too.
“What am I going to say if the real Ballon d’Or winner is Florentino Perez, he is a father to me. He taught me a lot and gave me everything in the world of football.”
Ronaldo’s understanding of the Ballon d’Or voting criteria might be debatable, but his selection could have ensured the presence of Florentino Perez and Real Madrid representatives at the Paris ceremony.
The Real Madrid president is a polarizing figure, known for his Galacticos transfer strategy and strong support for the controversial European Super League.
Like Vinicius Jr., Ronaldo has experienced being a Ballon d’Or runner-up. He finished second to Matthias Sammer in 1996 but went on to win the award in 1997 and 2002.
Vinicius has the potential to emulate his compatriot and secure multiple Ballon d’Or titles in the coming five seasons.
