Despite this, Ronaldo remains one of the competition’s greatest players, holding records for the most appearances, goals, and assists in Champions League history.
The Portuguese star has also won the competition five times – once with Manchester United and four times with Real Madrid.
During an appearance at the Globe Soccer Awards earlier this month, Ronaldo expressed his confidence that Real Madrid could retain the Champions League title this season.
“If you want to bet on a team in the Champions League, bet on Real Madrid,” Ronaldo said.
Real Madrid secured their 15th Champions League title last season, defeating Borussia Dortmund in the final held at Wembley.
However, with just two rounds remaining in the inaugural Champions League league phase, Real Madrid are at serious risk of being eliminated from the competition.
Teams need to finish in the top eight for automatic qualification to the round of 16, while those placed ninth to 24th will enter a two-legged playoff in February, with winners taking the remaining eight spots.
Teams ranked 25th to 36th will be ousted from the competition, without any chance of entering the Europa League.
Currently, Real Madrid sit in 20th place, having secured their first win in three games by narrowly defeating Atalanta in the last game-week.
Their final two matches in the competition will be against Red Bull Salzburg, who are in 32nd place, and seventh-placed French side Club Brest.
