Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer among the league’s best.
Despite United’s struggles this season, Fernandes has continued to shine individually, racking up 17 goals and 15 assists.
The team currently sits in 14th place, much closer to relegation than the top four, yet the Portuguese midfielder has been a consistent bright spot.
Palmer has been a key figure for Chelsea, registering 14 goals and eight assists. Though his influence has dipped since the turn of the year, his early-season brilliance has kept him in Rooney’s top five.
Joining Fernandes and Palmer on Rooney’s list are Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
Gibbs-White has played a crucial role in Forest’s surprising push for a Champions League spot and earned a return to the England squad during the last international break.
Isak has helped fire Newcastle to success, including a recent Carabao Cup triumph, and could be playing in Europe’s top competition next season.
Meanwhile, Salah is on track to claim the PFA Player of the Year award. The Liverpool talisman has delivered 27 goals and 18 assists in 33 league appearances, playing a pivotal role in the Reds’ title challenge.
When asked to name his top-five players this season, Rooney told Amazon Prime: ‘In fifth place, I think I’ll probably go with Bruno Fernandes.
‘Obviously Man United haven’t had a great season but he’s been the one consistent player who keeps producing so I’ll go with Bruno for number five.
‘In fourth place, I’d probably go with Morgan Gibbs-White. I think he’s had a fantastic season for Nottingham Forest, creating and scoring goals and being the main player there in my opinion.
‘In third place, I’d go with Cole Palmer. I know of late he hasn’t scored the goals he did at the start of the season, but I still think he’s been really influential for Chelsea this season.
‘In second place, I’d go with Isak from Newcastle. I think his all-round play, his goals, obviously scoring the goal in the final as well.
‘Isak would be my number two pick and my number one pick would be Mo Salah.
‘I think over the last few years his performances has been excellent and this season again it looks like he’s going to spearhead Liverpool to the title.’
