Chelsea legend John Terry has congratulated Harry Maguire on becoming England’s highest scoring defender while also taking a swipe at his biggest critics.
Maguire opened the scoring as England sealed a 10-0 victory over San Marino on Monday to book their place in the 2022 World Cup.
It was his second goal in as many matches having also nodded home against Albania last Friday, prompting a celebration that saw Manchester United legend Roy Keane describe him ‘an embarrassment’.

Maguire’s recent poor form for the Red devils led Keane to question the logic behind such a provocative celebration.
‘He’s put his hands to his ears like he’s shutting the critics up, but I think that’s embarrassing,’ Keane said.
‘He’s been a disgrace the last few months for Man United. He thinks because he’s scored there he’s going to shut his critics up? Embarrassing.’
Former England skipper Terry, who scored six times for his country, was quick to praise Maguire following the win after seeing the United defender overtake him. Terry also invited his critics to take note of his achievement.

Keane’s comments have divided opinion with former Aston Villa player Gabby Agbonlahor accusing the former Republic of Ireland international of ‘bullying’ Maguire.
England manager Gareth Southgate has also defended his player, suggesting Keane’s comments were made in an attempt to ‘stay relevant.’
