Thomas Tuchel blames two Chelsea players for West Ham defeat

Thomas Tuchel says Jorginho and Edouard Mendy were both at fault for West Ham’s penalty in Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat on Saturday.

The Blues have now lost their place at the top of the Premier League after throwing away the lead on two occasions against David Moyes’ side.

Thiago Silva had put Chelsea in front before Manuel Lanzini equalised from the spot. Mason Mount restored their advantage before the break but goals in the second half from Jarrod Bowen and Arthur Masuaku sealed the victory for West Ham.

For the penalty decision in the first half, Jorginho played a loose ball back to Mendy, who was under huge pressure from Bowen and ended up bringing down the West Ham player.

And Tuchel concedes his players have made ‘too many individual mistakes’ in recent matches. He told BT Sport: ‘I don’t think we did a bad match, it was OK, we can win with this performance,’ Tuchel told BT Sport.

‘It is tough to play here, we did too many individual mistakes, we did already against Manchester United and Watford and got punished, if you want a result at this level you have to minimise mistakes. We talked about it before, it’s obviously not helped.’

When asked about West Ham’s penalty decision, Tuchel said: ‘Everybody is involved, the pass [from Jorginho] is not the best decision to pass this ball back, the orientation is not the best, we can save it.

‘Decision making is also not the best from Edu in this moment, and then suddenly you concede.

‘You score a second one and lead at half time. We created a lot, a lot of half chances, we had a lot of chances int he box, sometimes you need a bit of luck maybe with a deflected shot or a loose ball that falls to our feet, this is what we did not have.

‘I think the second goal [from West Ham] is a goal you can concede but the third one is a strange one and in general like the two big chances in the first half it’s completely individual mistakes.

‘We couldn’t finish it with clear chances and be more ruthless. Struggled also in defending in some situations like when Thiago cleared the ball on the line, it’s right after our goal we had a horrible pass back into the feet of the opponent.

‘You cannot do this at this level. This is top-four Premier League level, this is way too many mistakes, it’s impossible to make so any mistakes and expect a result.’
