Bayern initially led with a goal from Alphonso Davies, who delivered a stunning right-footed shot, while Manuel Neuer showcased exceptional goalkeeping to maintain the lead.
However, an error by Neuer provided Joselu an opportunity to level the score at the 88th minute.
Shortly after, Real Madrid seized the advantage in both the game and the series when Joselu converted Antonio Rudiger’s pass, causing an uproar in the Bernabeu as VAR reversed an offside decision, validating the goal.
Bayern appeared to have equalized when Konrad Laimer converted Thomas Muller’s setup, but the referee Szymon Marciniak had already signaled offside, halting the play. Since the whistle was blown during active play, VAR could not review the decision.
The replay later revealed the offside call to be incredibly tight, leading to Bayern’s players expressing their frustration over the premature stoppage.
Post-match, in a conversation with TNT Sports, Tuchel mentioned that the assistant referee extended an apology to the Bayern players following the controversial call.
He explained: “It was a disastrous decision from the linesman, and from the referee.
“It feels almost like a betrayal in the end, because of that decision. But we have to say congratulations to Real Madrid.
“The linesman said sorry, but that doesn’t help at that kind of level. To raise the flag in a close decision in the last minute, and the referee as well, he does not have to whistle.
“It’s a very, very bad decision and it’s against the rules. Tough to swallow, but that’s the way it is.”
Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, later conveyed to Sky Sports Germany that referee Szymon Marciniak had offered him an apology regarding the contentious incident.
On the other hand, defender Matthijs de Ligt expressed to beIN Sports that the decision was a significant error. He corroborated manager Thomas Tuchel’s earlier statements about the assistant referee’s apology concerning the situation.
