Senny Mayulu, the newest breakout from PSG’s youth ranks, netted the equaliser 20 minutes later. With both teams struggling to take control, a draw appeared to be the most balanced result.
That changed when Goncalo Ramos found the net in the 90th minute, triggering debate over VAR’s choice of frame during the offside check. See below:
Footage shared with broadcasters showed the moment after Achraf Hakimi played the ball, which made Ramos look onside, rather than the actual point of contact for the pass.
The aftermath has been intense, with the match already viewed as an early benchmark between two contenders for the continent’s biggest prize. Now, new insights have emerged about the accuracy of that crucial call.
Although some claimed the officials behind the technology altered the broadcast feed to justify their ruling, further breakdowns have confirmed that the Portuguese forward was onside regardless of the frame used.
Archivo VAR, an X profile focused on scrutinizing such decisions, had initially called the ruling a “serious error” right after the match. But following a detailed re-evaluation, they issued a clarification on their initial verdict. They wrote:
“Analysis of PSG’s second goal with the appropriate frame. Although the ball is positioned further back, Goncalo Ramos remains in an enabled position. IT IS A LEGAL GOAL. Despite the serious error by the semi-automated offside technology system in selecting the frame, the goal is valid.”
PSG have started this season in dominant fashion, continuing the momentum from a campaign that saw them lift four trophies, including their long-awaited first Champions League crown.
After a 4-0 demolition of emerging Italian side Atalanta in the opening round, their away win against last year’s semi-finalists reinforces their ambition to defend their European title, as they remain firmly in the top tier of current rankings.
