What Klopp said about incoming Man Utd interim manager Ralf Rangnick

Klopp on Ragnick

Manchester United are on the brink of appointing Ralf Rangnick as their new interim manager, according to reports.

The German coach has agreed a six-month deal to take over at United until the end of the 2021-22 campaign with reports also suggesting he will be retained in a consultancy role until 2024.

It marks swift and decisive business from Red devils who confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit on Sunday with Michael Carrick stepping in as caretaker manager in Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Villarreal.

Rangnick is held in high regard across the continent and is considered an innovator of the pressing game in Germany with Jurgen Klopp paying him huge compliment.

‘One of the best, if not the best German coach,’ is how the Liverpool head coach once described Rangnick.

Rangnick has even compared his style to that of Klopp, even using the term ‘heavy football’ which the Liverpool manager has made his own since his Dortmund days.

In an interview with the Coaches Voice in September this year, Rangnick said: ‘Our idea is clear: it’s very, very similar to my almost-coaching friend Jurgen Klopp.

‘Our football is very heavy metal, rock and roll and it’s not slow balls. It’s not square passes, back passes. Just having the ball ourselves doesn’t make sense.’

Rangnick has also had big influence on Liverpool’s recent transfer activity with former player Guido Schafer, a former teammate of Klopp, revealing their talks over a recent signing at Anfield.

‘Rangnick told Jurgen ‘when you are able to buy both [Konate and then-teammate Dayot Upamecano], buy both’,’ Schafer said

‘They are both skilful players but the greater talent and the better player is Konate – he is outstanding.’

Rangnick has previously coached Bundesliga teams Hannover, Schalke and Hoffenheim before moving into a management role with RB Leipzig.
