William Gallas: Senderos had panic attacks before facing Didier Drogba

Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas has revealed his ex-Arsenal teammate Philippe Senderos suffered panic attacks before games.

The duo were centre-back partners in an Arsenal team which, despite having the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor, failed to deliver the silverware for their club.

In particular, that Arsenal group suffered at the hands of Chelsea and their deadly striker Didier Drogba, who had an incredible record of 13 goals in 15 matches against the Gunners in all competitions.

‘I knew Philippe Senderos, before a match he would need to speak a lot, you could see that he was sweating, that he did not feel good,’ Gallas told RMC.

‘Especially against certain players. I saw him against Chelsea, against Didier Drogba, where he would genuinely panic, like he was going through his match before playing it.

‘And unfortunately, when you saw him on the pitch, he lost his playing abilities, he didn’t play well. But against his own team-mates, he played better.’

Philippe Senderos signed for Arsenal under Arsene Wenger in 2003 and was originally seen as a perfect replacement for legendary captain Tony Adams.

The Switzerland international showed initial promise, keeping Sol Campbell out of the 2005 FA Cup final winning team and played every match, as Arsenal kept 10 consecutive clean sheets en route to the final of the 2006 Champions League.

Senderos, 33, is currently playing for Houston Dynamo and has also played for the likes of Fulham, Aston Villa, Valencia, AC Milan and Rangers.
