Xavi aims dig at Garnacho after ‘provocative’ Man Utd celebration Barcelona

Barcelona head coach Xavi has aimed a dig at Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho after his ‘provocative’ full-time celebration in midweek.

The Argentine teenager shone from the bench as United came from behind to knock Barcelona out of the UEFA Europa League and progress to the knockout rounds.

Garnacho came off the bench after 67 minutes to replace Jadon Sancho and contributed to Antony’s winner just six minutes later, playing a major role in the build-up to the goal.

The result sparked wild scenes in Old Trafford, with the 18-year-old appearing to mock Barcelona star Pedri by copying his celebration at full-time.

Pedri, who missed the second leg through an injury, normally celebrates his goal by putting his hands over his eyes to mimic wearing glasses, a tribute to his father who wears them.

Garnacho received abuse from Barcelona supporters on social media for uploading a picture of the celebration, and now Xavi has waded into the debate as well.

When quizzed on the incident, the Barcelona boss said: “It is a difficult question to answer. When the player is happy, all the anger and different injustices towards you come out. Each one expresses it as it comes out. There is a bit of empathy missing.

“I think you have to celebrate with your teammates and not celebrate as a provocation for the other.”
