Timo Werner ‘stance’ on Man Utd transfer emerges with Ten Hag keen on Chelsea flop

Timo Werner may be enticed by a return to the Premier League if Manchester United pursue a loan deal for him in January.

Despite struggling for goals during his time at Chelsea, RB Leipzig’s striker is seen as a potential solution to United’s goal-scoring issues by manager Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils have scored only 22 Premier League goals this season, a tally surpassed by relegation-threatened Sheffield United and Burnley.

Rasmus Hojlund’s £72 million move from Atalanta has not yielded the expected results, and Marcus Rashford is far from the form he displayed in the 2022/23 season.

Despite enduring various spells of pressure on his coaching role, Ten Hag is said to be seeking winter additions to bolster United’s offensive capabilities.

The Mirror reports that Werner is on the shortlist, and the German striker might be inclined to return to England just 18 months after leaving Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea invested £47 million in Werner based on his impressive Bundesliga goal-scoring record from 2016 to 2020.

However, the 27-year-old fell short of expectations, registering only 10 Premier League goals over two seasons before returning to Germany.

Werner’s progress this season has been hampered by injuries, resulting in just two Bundesliga starts and two goals. However, Ten Hag values his dynamic presence upfront, a factor that contributed to Chelsea’s Champions League victory under Thomas Tuchel.

RB Leipzig may be open to letting Werner go, especially with prolific goal-scorer Lois Openda in their ranks. Despite expectations for Hojlund to lead the line, the 20-year-old Dane has only managed one Premier League goal.

There’s also interest in Bayern Munich’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting at Old Trafford, as playing time for strikers Harry Kane and Mathys Tel is limited in Bavaria.

Given Financial Fair Play constraints, United is likely to pursue loan deals in January. Offloading high earners like Jadon Sancho could provide Ten Hag with some flexibility.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new part-owner of the Red Devils, is expected to be involved in significant January transfer decisions, even though his ownership has not yet been officially approved by the Premier League.
