Chelsea in danger of missing out on Kai Havertz transfer if they fail to finish in top-four

Kai Havertz

Chelsea are in danger of missing out on the signing of Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen after their 3-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Saturday evening, according to reports.

The blues were destroyed by Chris Wilder’s side and could now drop to fifth in the League table if Manchester United and Leicester City both win their respective matches.

But, a fifth-place finish could be enough for Chelsea to get a place in next campaign’s Champions League if Manchester City’s two-season ban is upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Pep Guardiola’s side will find out if their appeal to CAS has been successful or not at 9.30am on Monday.

However, if City’s ban is overturned, the blues would need to finish fourth in the Premier League to get a place in the Champions League.

And according to Bild, Chelsea’s status as a Champions League team will have a huge impact on their ability to sign Kai Havertz this summer window.

His current side, Bayer Leverkusen, finished fifth in the German League, two points below a fourth-placed finish which would have secured them a place in the European competition next campaign.

Havertz has already told Leverkusen he wants to leave due to their lack of Champions League football next season and Bild claim that he may not move to Stamford Bridge if Chelsea were also miss out on the competition.

However, Chelsea do have some factors in their favour as Havertz is happy at the prospect of playing alongside Timo Werner, who has already joined the blues this summer.

And Chelsea are preparing their first offer of €70m which includes add-ons for the midfielder. To finance the deal, the blues will sell Emerson, Bakayoko and likely Jorginho.

Havertz is also believed to be attracted by Frank Lampard’s vision for Chelsea after the midfielder’s representatives held discussions with the club’s hierarchy.

Chelsea also have limited competition in the early stages of the summer window as Bayern Munich have confirmed they won’t make a move for the player.
