Atletico Madrid hijack Barcelona’s move for Mason Greenwood

Atletico Madrid has initiated negotiations to secure the services of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, potentially outmaneuvering their rivals Barcelona in the process.

Greenwood is currently on a season-long loan at La Liga side Getafe, where he has made a positive impression.

Following 18 months away from the pitch due to allegations of domestic assault, Manchester United decided that Greenwood’s future development would be better served outside Old Trafford.

Despite a gradual return to fitness after joining Getafe, Greenwood’s recent performances have been outstanding.

With five goals and four assists in 15 appearances, he left a significant impact, with Antoine Griezmann acknowledging that Greenwood ‘destroyed’ his Atletico side.

While Barcelona has been linked with an interest in the English forward and is reportedly considering offering him the prestigious no.10 shirt previously worn by Lionel Messi, Atletico seems to have taken the lead in the race for Greenwood.

This advantage is attributed to Barcelona’s challenging financial situation.

Manchester United is reportedly seeking around £40m for Greenwood, and his contract with the club extends until at least 2025, with the option of an additional year.

Diego Simeone has been impressed with Greenwood’s adaptation to Spanish football, prompting Atletico to enter discussions with United regarding the potential transfer and its accompanying conditions.
