Man Utd ‘set date’ for Mason Greenwood decision after Ratcliffe opens door

Manchester United has scheduled a date to determine Mason Greenwood’s future.

During the previous summer, Greenwood mutually parted ways with United and embarked on a season-long loan with Spanish club Getafe following an internal investigation into his behavior.

In January 2022, the one-time international player was arrested under suspicion of rape, controlling behavior, and assault—allegations Greenwood vehemently denied and which were subsequently dismissed.

Since then, he has revitalized his career in La Liga, tallying seven goals and five assists in 25 appearances for Getafe. His stellar performances have led to speculation linking him with clubs such as Barcelona and a potential return to United.

Indeed, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s new minority owner overseeing football operations, recently hinted at the possibility of Greenwood’s return.

Speaking to the Athletic, he said: “We need to look at facts, judge fairly and take into consideration what the values of the club are.

“Then we come out of that with a decision. It is not appropriate for me to comment on Mason Greenwood.”

As per reports from Sun Sport, Ratcliffe aims to finalize Greenwood’s future with United before the end of May.

Allegedly, Ratcliffe has instructed his team of advisers to make resolving this issue a top priority before the season concludes.

Reportedly, the petrochemicals billionaire intends to engage with fan groups and other senior club officials to gather insights on Greenwood before reaching a final verdict.

It has been suggested that while Erik ten Hag would welcome Greenwood’s return, any decision would be contingent on it being beneficial for all parties involved.

An unnamed source told the publication: “Jim Ratcliffe wants it resolved by the end of May so they can go into the summer knowing what’s happening.

“There’s interest in Mason from Barcelona but no move and no talks will happen until the end of May. Right now, the view is that there is a 50/50 chance Mason could return.

“If it was a purely football decision he’d already be back. But it’s not.

“And Ratcliffe is acutely aware of the need to get this right and for all parties to be happy with whatever is decided.”
