Bruno Fernandes is impressed with Van de Beek’s hard work over the summer as he hopes that can see him muscle his way into the Manchester United team.

Van de Beek arrived at the club last summer from Ajax for a fee of £35m, which may rise to £40m with add-ons.

But, things have not worked out well for him in the Premier League so far, struggling to make any kind of impact in the Red devils first team.

The midfielder made only four starts in the league last campaign, scoring on his debut but that remains his only goal for United.

It was an underwhelming first campaign at the club for the player but he has spent the summer working on a new fitness regime which has seen him pack on the muscle.

Fernandes, who is a guaranteed starter under Solskjaer, has not only been impressed with his work in the gym, but also his quality.

‘Yes he’s working hard and working hard in the gym,’ Fernandes told Manchester United’s official website. ‘Obviously he is one of the quality players we know and now he’s building up.’

Fernandes is not the only United star to be impressed by Van de Beek’s work in the gym, with Maguire commenting on a post which saw the player wearing the captain’s armband in a friendly game.

The England international wrote: ‘Don’t stretch that armband @Donnyvdbeek!’

Fernandes will be aiming to try and push Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table this season, having seen Jadon Sancho arrive at the club and Raphael Varane about to join as well.

Fernandes added: ‘As a professional player you always prepare for your season before you come back for training, you always do something before and I think everyone was doing their jobs at home.

‘I’m happy to see how everyone is, how happy they are to be back and they are training really hard.’

Manchester United will start their Premier League season at home against Leeds United on Saturday 14 August.
