‘He looked lost’ – Karen Carney criticizes Man Utd star after Southampton draw

Anthony Martial continued his good run of form with a sublime display against Copenhagen

Karen Carney criticised Anthony Martial after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Southampton, claiming he ‘looked lost’ and ‘didn’t know what he was doing’.

Mason Greenwood’s second-half goal gave Solskjaer’s side a point at St Mary’s on Sunday after Che Adams’ strike, a deflection off Fred saw the Saints take the lead.

Martial saw a header cleared off the line early on but was poor for the rest of the game, eventually being subbed off on 59 minutes and replaced by Jadon Sancho.

‘I have not seen Anthony Martial,’ Carney told BBC Radio 5 Live. ‘I don’t think he knows what he is doing or offering, he looks lost.’

While former England player Carney criticised Martial, she hailed Paul Pogba and said he was ‘a class above everyone else’ in the game.

‘At the end of the day, footballers are all actors and actresses and they are coming into an arena to perform,’ the 34-year-old said.

‘That is what Paul Pogba is, he has got the tricks, the flicks, the passes. The way he looks, he has got an aura, a swagger about him.

‘He will be loving this, every player wants to play in front a big crowd and he laps that up. He was a class above everybody else today both in and out of possession.’

Carney added: ‘Both sets of players went to their knees when the final whistle went. Physical game today, end to end at times.

‘Man United started the game the better and then Southampton grew into it, got in amongst it and took the lead.

‘In the second half United came out a little bit better and Mason Greenwood got the equaliser, clinical with that. In the end I think it is a fair result for both sides.’

Mason Greenwood said: ‘There’s a little bit of disappointment. I think we should have got all three points with a late goal.

‘But Southampton did well. They defended well but I think we should have went for it after the equaliser but unfortunately we didn’t.’
