Jamie Carragher says five players have stood out in the Premier League so far this campaign, but Mohamed Salah has shone more brightly than anyone.
The Liverpool forward is level with Jamie Vardy at the top of the goalscoring charts with six goals in just seven matches so far this season, and with three assists to his name as well.
It is no surprise that Carragher has picked the Egyptian star as his top performer so far, but there are some more surprising names in his top five.
The former England player has turned to the two biggest signings of the campaign so far and some Everton stars to complete his top five of the season to date.
‘I think there’s probably been four or five who’ve really stood out,’ Carragher told Sky Bet’s The Overlap.
‘I saw [Cristiano] Ronaldo got player of the month and he has had a huge impact, there’s no doubt. I think of [Romelu] Lukaku, certainly the start of the season.
‘A couple of Everton players as well, Andros Townsend has been amazing, [Abdoulaye] Doucoure as well.
‘But probably off the back of the goal he scored against Man City, I’d probably say Mo Salah. ‘I think he’s top scorer in the league and I think he probably just edges it at the moment. I’d go for Mo Salah.’
The goal Carragher refers to was the superb solo effort in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City, which left the Liverpool legend claiming the Egyptian is the best player on the planet right now.
‘I don’t think there’s anyone better in the world at this moment or in European football, I really don’t,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.
‘I’ve seen the Champions League, his record over the last few weeks has been outstanding.
‘You can never question him too much for what he’s done at Liverpool. But right now is about as sharp as I’ve ever seen him.’
