Meanwhile, Fenerbahce remains unbeaten in the new league format, sitting seven places above Erik ten Hag’s team in 14th place with four points.

Before the game, Fred aimed to stir things up by sending a bold message to his former captain Bruno Fernandes via WhatsApp.

“I messaged Bruno (Fernandes) saying “We will kill you and he responded ‘No, we will kill you’ but then my friend got a red card (against Porto) so he won’t play with us,” Fred explained.

Fernandes received his second red card in consecutive games during United’s last Europa League match after being shown a second yellow for a high boot against Porto. This came just days after his contentious sending off against Spurs.

Fred also acknowledged the tough period his former club is going through and expressed that he doesn’t take pleasure in seeing his old teammates struggle.

However, he made it clear that once the match starts, there will be no holding back.

“They are not in the best moment but I support them. I’m upset when they don’t get good results or don’t play well but against us, it’s different. On Thursday, they can’t play well,” he opened.

Mourinho also spoke about his time at Old Trafford ahead of the match, and in true Jose style, made sure to reference his achievements at the club.

“As you know, we won the Europa League, we finished second in the Premier League,” Mourinho said.

The ‘Special One’ also made the claim that United might be crowned Premier League champions after the conclusion of Manchester City’s legal battle with the Premier League.

“I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points, and maybe we win that league. Then they have to pay me the bonus and give me my medal,” he joked.
