Ferdinand & Scholes criticise Man Utd star for his role in Atletico winner

Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have criticised Anthony Elanga’s role in the goal that saw Atletico Madrid eliminate Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League.

Renan Lodi’s header was the only goal in Wednesday’s second leg game at Old Trafford and was enough to seal a 2-1 aggregate for the La Liga giants.

The Red devils enjoyed a bright first-half but were undone on the counter-attack by the Spanish side with Antoine Griezmann picking out the full-back who headed home.

The hosts were outnumbered as Atletico Madrid pounced with Diogo Dalot isolated and left to mark three players.

Elanga, who felt he was fouled in the build-up to the goal could not get back in time to help at the back with Ferdinand and Scholes saying the young Swede showed a lack of discipline.

‘I go back to Elanga, this is where you have to be disciplined and follow people, put in those hard yards,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport.

‘You need bodies to come back and to chase and to help and unfortunately in that position it was one man against three.’

Scholes added: ‘The back four, don’t get me wrong they are absolutely all over the place but Elanga, he has to sprint back into shape.

‘This is the last 16 of the Champions League against a team who are unbelievably experienced in this competition.

‘When you are out of your shape, you’ve lost the ball the first thing you do is sprint back and he hasn’t done it.’
