Greenwood backed for Man United ‘second chance’ after return decision ‘agreed’

Mason Greenwood is being encouraged to receive a second opportunity at Manchester United after completing a season-long loan at Getafe.

Despite a previous change in the club’s stance, former Red Devils winger Ian Storey-Moore supports Greenwood’s return to Old Trafford following the resolution of legal matters in February.

An internal inquiry led by United’s CEO Richard Arnold aimed at reintegrating Greenwood reportedly received initial support from football director John Murtough and manager Erik ten Hag.

However, external criticism and threats of staff striking allegedly prompted a reversal, leading to Greenwood’s loan to Getafe.

Despite United’s reported stance against his return, Storey-Moore advocates for Greenwood to stay at Old Trafford in the upcoming season to bolster the team’s attacking strength.

“Everybody deserves a second chance. He has served his time, so to speak, and they should possibly let him back in next season,” Storey-Moore told Express Sport.

“He’s an asset, isn’t he? I think he’s better than what they’ve got when he’s at his best, absolutely.”

The lone Premier League goal scored by a United forward this season came from Marcus Rashford in a 3-1 defeat against Arsenal in September.

Ten Hag’s team has struggled with a meager 13 goals in 12 league matches, a tally surpassed by only six other teams.

Despite being United’s most expensive-ever striker with a £72 million summer deal, Rasmus Hojlund is yet to score in the Premier League, while excelling with five goals in four Champions League group fixtures.

Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho are facing challenges, and Mason Greenwood could enhance Ten Hag’s attacking options.

However, the INEOS regime might encounter resistance, both internally and externally, if they aim to bring Greenwood back next year.
