Guardiola reveals message from Alex Ferguson after Man City’s treble win

Pep Guardiola has revealed he received a message from Sir Alex Ferguson before Manchester City completed their historic treble against Inter Milan.

City sealed a 1-0 victory over Inter in the UEFA Champions League final to secure their third trophy of the campaign after the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Man City have now joined Manchester United to become the second English club in history to win the treble after Ferguson guided his team to the three trophies in 1999.

And Guardiola revealed after Saturday’s final that Ferguson got in touch before City’s win over Inter.

‘It’s an honour for me to be alongside Sir Alex Ferguson. I got a message from him this morning. It touched me. It was nice,’ Guardiola said.

Guardiola also joked that Manchester City are now on the path to catch Real Madrid, who have been crowned champions of Europe 14 times.

‘We are just 13 Champions Leagues away [from Real Madrid],’ Guardiola said.

‘Just 13. Be careful Real Madrid because we are on the way. If you sleep a little bit, we will catch you.

‘We cannot compare [to them]. Now we have the first, when people say Man City is already the first Champions League but I don’t want after one Champions League to disappear. We have to work harder next season and be there.

‘There are teams that win the Champions League and then disappear after one or two seasons. We have to avoid it.

‘Knowing me, it is not going to happen but it is a big relief for the club and the institution to have this trophy because now finally they are not going to ask me if we are going to win the Champions League or not. Now you have to prepare the next question.’
