Guardiola ‘obsessed’ with signing £85m Premier League star for Man City

Pep Guardiola reportedly has a strong interest in a certain Premier League standout and is considering adding him to the Manchester City roster.

Following City’s unprecedented treble victory last season, Guardiola rejuvenated his team lineup.

Players such as Ilkay Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte, and Cole Palmer departed, making way for newcomers Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, Jeremy Doku, and Matheus Nunes.

Yet, it seems Guardiola is intent on securing another high-profile player during the summer transfer window.

Fichajes reports that Guardiola’s attention is squarely on Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United and the Brazilian national team.

Guimaraes, who transferred from Lyon to the Premier League in January 2022 for £40 million, has since racked up 97 appearances.

With Newcastle looking to liquidate some of their prized players to balance the books after hefty investments, Guimaraes stands out as one of their most marketable players.

His market value is estimated at around £85 million, with some speculations suggesting a £100 million buy-out clause in his contract.

Guardiola has not been shy about his esteem for Guimaraes, previously praising him as “exceptional” before City’s FA Cup quarter-final victory against Newcastle.

Speaking at a press conference, Guardiola said: “He is an exceptional holding midfielder. He is aggressive, with the ball or without the ball.

At set pieces, he’s aggressive and is a real, complete holding midfielder since being at Lyon and now at a club who want to grow up and up.

“I’m sure he’s part of the project for the next years. Definitely.”

Although he has been linked with a number of teams, Guimaraes signed a new contract extension in October and has no plans to move on.

He told Sky Sports: “I’m happy here, in this club doing my best. I love the way the fans like me so I focus on my football and let the people speak.

“Sometimes (people speak about me leaving Newcastle). I’m very happy here, enjoy it a lot. I never felt so much love for the fans like here.

“They’ve been unbelievable for me and my family so I try to play for fans. So I hope I can keep going here for as long as possible.”
